In March this year after a long and successful tsunami appeal,
Castleknock Community College presented a cheque for 28,700
to Chandie Monerawela of the Irish-Sri Lanka Trust Fund. The
money will be used to put nine fishing boats back in the water
in south East Asia.
.
A representative of GOAL was also present and collected a
signed Ronaldo jersey which, in an incredibly generous gesture,
was donated by staff member Richard Lalor. It will be auctioned
at one of the organizations gala dinners and they expect it
to sell for at least €4,000.
During the afternoon Molly Ebbs, a first year student who
having raised €700, the single greatest amount from any
student was presented with a DVD recorder, sponsored by Dave
Sheedy of Park Marketing
The campaign with it's now famous slogan "Stand Up Like
You've Never Stood Up Before" began towards the end of
January when two ambitious teachers, Mary McDermott and Eoin
O' Maoileoin proposed a fundraiser, the aim of which would
be to raise €24,000.
Despite the original cloud of doubt and scepticism the campaign
kicked off and in its first week made a phenomenal €13,000.
A substantial section of this figure was raised as a result
of Wednesday 27th of January being declared "Pyjama Day".
An election also took place to decide which two teachers
would become students for a day. Despite votes costing two
euro there was a better turnout than in any general election
and the eventual winners (or losers depending on how one looks
at it) were Annie Brooks and Shane Foley.
Throughout the second and third week money continued to arrive
and the goals which originally seemed impossible were achieved
and surpassed. By the final Friday 25,748 had been collected,
eight boats and a surplus of over one thousand. But as they
say it's not over 'til the fat lady sings or, in this case,
'til the fat ladies wrestle.
At lunchtime two brave teachers, Ruth Fitzsimons and Sinéad
Clerkin donned their sumo suits and wrestled against one another
and several other defenceless teachers in front of a 200 strong
crowd of laughing students. Perhaps braver still was there
decision to take to the streets of Temple Bar in sumo form
to raise even more.
Their colleagues Ian McColgan and Pádraic Mac a Bhaird
had their heads shaved for the cause following in the footsteps
of Niall O Toole and Alan McDarby who had their legs waxed
in aid of the campaign two weeks beforehand.
Ultimately the success of the project is as a result of the
hard work and dedication of Eoin O' Maoileoin, Mary McDermott
and the groups of sixth, fifth and transition Year students
who drove and inspired the entire campaign.
