  Business Studies

Business Studies

  • The Business Studies course has four separate but related areas:
  • The Business of Living
  • Economic & Business Background
  • Enterprise
  • Information Technology
Aims:
  • To contribute to a balanced and appropriate general education at the Junior Certificate level, leading to the personal and social development of each student.
  • To provide students with the required level of business knowledge and promote entrepreneurship.
  • To provide a basis for the students which could lead to employment in this area.

  • Each of these parts teaches you how to manage your money and make better decisions.  This means that you are encouraged to become more responsible about your money and how you spend it.  You will learn that “leaving things to chance” is a poor rule for life.  It is better to make plans and learn from any mistakes you make.
  • Personal and household finance is the basis for Part 1:The Business of Living.  At the end of your study of this section you will understand the types of financial decisions that people and families are faced with.  Some of this will be new to you.  Some of it you will probably take for granted.  The aim of this section is to make you aware of the role you can play in controlling your finances whether you are too young to work, are unemployed, self-employed or work for someone else.

  • The Enterprise Component of the course relates mainly to the bookkeeping element thereby students are given an introduction to the financial records required by companies, clubs, farms, sole traders etc.
  • The I. T. component of this course has yet to be fully developed but presently students gain an appreciation for the role of I.T.in modern living and business.
  • This course is designed in a user friendly and interactive way and gives the students a thorough and practical appreciation for the world of business.

  • The rest of the First Year course applies to the household situation and to the business setting.  At home it is your money you are spending.  When you work for someone else it is their money you are spending.  If you make mistakes with their money or if you spend it foolishly then your employer will not be too pleased.  Therefore, these decisions are similar to the home, but because you are dealing with someone else’s money great care must be taken.
  • This course is a natural precursor to the three Leaving Certificate Subjects: Accounting, Economics & Business.. However it is not necessary to have studied Business Studies at Junior Cycle to pursue it at Senior Cycle.

  • Business Studies
  • What the students think:

  • “I like Business Studies because I have a great interest in the subject. It gives you the ability to do your own finances.  I also learned how to set up a business and how to apply for loans.”  Ciara Moylan
  • “What I enjoy about Business Studies is the range of topics that are covered.  For example it can involve budgeting and consumer education.  We also learn about our rights as consumers, which is very interesting.  It is also good for future employers to see that you have studied this subject and have a broad knowledge of business.”
  • Miriam Myles

  • “I like Business Studies because it teaches me how to be responsible with my money and how money works.  I really enjoyed the section, “The Business of Living”.  This taught me about all the financial decisions that people and families must make.”
  • Ciara Loughney

  • “I really enjoy Business Studies because it’s very interesting and it helps you understand a lot of the stories in the news.  Business Studies helps you to manage your money by doing simple household accounts and how to “shop around” for the best rates in banks and how to make a complaint if you purchased a faulty item.”
